Traffic Jam in Abu Dhabi

How many cars do you think there are in Abu Dhabi? It’s a good question that lets us think about the traffic jam inside Abu Dhabi Island. As we know Abu Dhabi’s outskirts are made to serve for the long term and future but if we think about Abu Dhabi Island itself we are going to face a huge problem to solve the traffic jam considering the narrow streets and the tight area.

In a research done in 2012 by the Department of Vehicle and Drivers' Licensing at Abu Dhabi about the traffic jams, there are 830,000 cars in Abu Dhabi and the number is increasing by 20% yearly that’s make the Ministry of Interior under pressure to take an action to find a critical solution, However the problem can be solved but how, when and what are the solutions that may work in a city that was built to be a small town 40 years ago.

In December 2012 Abu Dhabi government opened the longest tunnel in the Middle East with 4.2 km. Sheikh Zayed tunnel was a good support to reduce the traffic but as we said in the beginning the increment of the cars is very high. On the other hand the public transportation isn't good enough which makes the government take a lot of time to improve it by constructing a metro or tram for example. Also the people in UAE specially locals they wont to walk or exert an effort to use public transportation. Furthermore the weather in Abu Dhabi is hot and humid most of the year. But Dubai had made it despite all the challenges by building the Dubai metro and they expand the project every year. Abu Dhabi has a strong economics, companies, brains and a strategy; they started to build a rail between Habshan and Ruwais for industry purposes which is good step. But in my opinion the people need to be educated and be aware about public transportation benefits. I also read in many websites trying to find a solution for this problem and I choose the abstract which in my opinion has the chance to work.

-build the metro networks as soon as possible

-require a tax to enter Abu Dhabi; or in another way the car which has less than 3 passengers should bay for a tax.

-build more bridges leading to Abu Dhabi island.

-convert some of the city center streets into one way roads to reduce the biggest amount of traffic jams.
